Effect of Hydroxyurea on Priapism in Men with Sickle Cell Disease

Synopsis:

This report represents a retrospective case series of males with sickle cell disease who have recurrent episodes of ischaemic priapism and were being treated with hydroxyurea for other indications. We evaluated the changes in priapism episodes in these patients.

The exotic and invasive marine lionfish is well known for its resplendent colors, variegated strips and its toxin. We report the first documented capture of P volitans in the waters off the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Importance of Smoking Cessation as Part of Lung Cancer Control Measures in Japan

INTRODUCTION

A study of annual trends in the number of deaths and mortality rate in Japan found that lung cancer is one of the most frequent causes of death (1). Lung cancer is clearly associated with cigarette smoking (2). Thus, this paper reviews reports on the importance of measures to stop smoking as part of lung cancer control measures in Japan and it discusses how these findings can be linked to more specific preventive measures.

Short Commentary Echocardiographic Findings in an Afro-Caribbean Population Referred for Evaluation of Incidental Bundle Branch Block on Electrocardiogram

Incidental left bundle branch block is associated with echocardiographic abnormalities more frequently than incidental right bundle branch block which is often a benign finding in Afro-Caribbean patients. One should assess the former and follow the latter.

Six weeks after the passage of Hurricane Ivan, factors strongly correlated with post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms were social support, gender, stressful life experience, emotional experience during the hurricane and experiences of loss and injury as a result of the hurricane.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study seeks to identify factors associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following Hurricane Ivan among a cohort of tertiary-level students in Jamaica.

Methods: A 22-item, self-administered questionnaire was administered to a non-random sample. Using parametric and non-parametric analyses, the relationship between PTSD symptoms and several
variables was examined.

Choline: Are our University Students Eating Enough?

Synopsis:

Choline is an essential nutrient; the authors therefore examined the dietary intake of choline among medical and biochemistry students at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies. Students were asked to make detailed records of all that they consumed for three days. It was found that most, student, had diets that delivered less than the daily adequate intake of choline (425─550 mg/day).

Resistance in Clinical Isolates of Enterococcus faecalis Encountered at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Jamaica

Synopsis:

Enterococcus faecalis isolates were examined by an automated system. Almost all isolates were ampicillin susceptible and tetracycline resistant. About a third showed high lever aminoglycoside resistance and these isolates were usually ciprofloxacin, resistance. Seven isolates were vancomycin resistant.
