Russell Pierre Promoted to the Rank of Professor

The University of the West Indies, Mona is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Russell Pierre, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Child Health and Adolescent Health, Faculty of Medical Sciences, to the rank of Professor, with effect from October 3, 2012.
 
Dr. Pierre holds the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree (1983), the Advanced Diploma in Child Health (DCH) (1986), the Doctor of Medicine (DM) degree in Paediatrics (1992) as well as a Masters degree in Public Health (2001) from The University of the West Indies, Mona. 
 

Byron Wilson Promoted to the Rank of Professor

The University of the West Indies, Mona is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr Byron Wilson, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science & Technology (formerly Pure & Applied Sciences) to the rank of Professor, with effect from October 3, 2012.
 
Byron Wilson holds the Bachelor of Arts in Zoology from the University of California, Berkley, and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Zoology from the University of Washington (Seattle). He joined the staff of The UWI, Mona in 1998 as a Research Fellow and was appointed Lecturer in 2001 and later promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2007.
 

UWI Open Campus Welcomes New Head in The Bahamas

The Open Campus Council of the University of the West Indies (UWI) has approved the appointment of Dr. Barbara A. Rodgers-Newbold to the post of Head, The University of The West Indies, Open Campus, The Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Dr. Rodgers-Newbold’s appointment became effective on Monday, October 15, 2012.
 

The UWI Mona Campus Re-Opens Friday, October 26

Normal operations will resume at The University of the West Indies’ Mona Campus in Kingston, as well as the Western Jamaica Campus in Montego Bay on Friday, October 26, 2012.

Members of staff are asked to report to work at the usual time. Classes will also be held as scheduled. Staff and students are expected to assess their personal risk before reporting to the Campus.

UWI Alumna Elected to Lead PAHO

A Caribbean national has been elected as the new Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Dr. Carissa Etienne, a native of Dominica, was elected on September 19th, 2012, by PAHO member states to lead the world’s oldest and foremost public health organisation.
 
A graduate of The University of the West Indies, Mona, Dr. Etienne will begin her five-year term on February 1st, 2013, succeeding Dr. Mirta Roses Periago of Argentina, who has been PAHO Director since 2003. She follows in the distinguished footsteps of the Chancellor of UWI, Sir George Alleyne of Barbados, who served as PAHO director from 1995 to 2003.
 

Closure of the UWI Mona Campus

Owing to the threat posed by Tropical Storm Sandy, all activities at The University of the West Indies’ Mona Campus in Kingston, as well as the Western Jamaica Campus in Montego Bay will be suspended at 4.00 p.m. today, Tuesday, October 23, 2012. The University will remain closed tomorrow, Wednesday, October 24, 2012.
 
Special arrangements are being made for students who are resident on the Mona Campus to remain in hall.  This includes all regional and international students. Students who wish to leave the Campus may do so, however, they must advise the Student Services Manager of the respective hall, of their departure.
 

Kahwa Elected To Prestigious TWAS Fellowship

Dean of the Faculty of Science & Technology,(formerly Pure & Applied Sciences) and Professor of Supramolecular Chemistry at The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona,  Professor Ishenkumba Kahwa, has been elected a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), formerly known as the academy of sciences for the developing world. 
 
TWAS is an autonomous international organization, founded in 1983 in Trieste, Italy, by a distinguished group of scientists from the South under the leadership of the late Nobel laureate Abdus Salam of Pakistan. The Academy represents the best of science in developing countries, its main mission being to promote scientific excellence and capacity in the South for science-based sustainable development.

UWI Chancellor Sir George Alleyne: The Champ

According to Julio Frenk, Dean of the Harvard School of Public Health, UWI Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne, was nicknamed “The Champ” back in high school on account of his mastery of everything he turned his hand to, and the name stuck. It's an epithet more usually reserved for heavyweight boxers, but seems equally apt for an intellectual bruiser like Alleyne. “He's a rare combination”, says Frenk: “a deep thinker, on the one hand, and a good policy maker with very good political instincts, on the other.” That combination proved extremely useful during Alleyne's influential reign as Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) from 1995 until 2003.
 

UWI Professor Leads UN Working Group of Experts on Mission to the UK

Professor Verene Shepherd, University Director of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies at The University of the West Indies (UWI) and Chairperson of the United Nations Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent (WGPAD) will lead a mission to the United Kingdom from October 1-5, 2012. The Mission is designed to gather first-hand information on the situation of people of African descent in that country. Also participating in the Mission are: Chair-Rapporteur; Ms. Monorama BISWAS(Bangladesh); Ms. Mireille FANON-MENDES-FRANCE (France); Ms. Mirjana NAJCEVSKA (The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) and Ms. Maya SAHLI (Algeria). 
 

Merger at UWI Creates Largest Business School in the Region

The Department of Management Studies (DOMS), and The Mona School of Business (MSB) of The University of the West Indies, have merged to become Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) effective August 1, 2012 a single business school within the Faculty of Social Sciences.
