Hurricane Instructions for members of staff

As part of the ongoing preparatory activities for the Campus for the 2014 Hurricane Season which began on June 1st, ALL members of staff are being urged to pay close attention to the hurricane instructions outlined below.

UWI Mona student Hansle Parchment wins 110M hurdles at Diamond League

Jamaican Olympian Bronze Medalist and UWI, Mona athlete, Hansle Parchment has set a new Jamaican national record and world-leading time after running 12.94 seconds to win the men’s 110m hurdles event during the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) Diamond League competition at Stade de France in Saint-Denis on July 5.


Parchment beat his own previous personal best of 13.05 seconds set at Eugene, Oregon last year.

 

To win, Parchment defeated the most consistent sprint hurdler this season - France’s Pascal Martinot-Lagarde who ran 13.05 seconds and Cuba’s Orlando Ortega - at a season’s best of 13.10 seconds.

 

UWI Mona and China Institute sign sweet potato research agreement

A research agreement focused on developing and innovating technologies to preserve the shelf-life and quality of sweet potato and its by-products was signed by The University of the West Indies, Mona and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science (CAAS) on June 19.
 
The agreement involves research by the Laboratory of Crop Science, UWI Mona campus, headed by Professor Noureddine Benkeblia, and the Postharvest Science Laboratory, Institute of Sweetpotato Research/Xuzhou Sweetpotato Research Center, Xuzhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science (CAAS), headed by Dr. Qinghe Cao.
 

UWI Mona discovers anti cancer properties in yams

Research conducted by Dr. Dennis Bailey, for his Doctorate Degree, has revealed the presence of anti-cancer properties in indigenous varieties of  yams cultivated in Jamaica, namely the Dioscorea alata cultivar more popularly known as St. Vincent Dark night and Moonshine Yams.

Bailey confirmed the anti cancer potency of the yams by conducting research at the cellular level, inside the body of rats and in test tubes, using cancer cell lines in the breast, colon and skin. He found that their cancer reduced in size dramatically in comparison to the control group of rats.

UWI LEADS to select 2014/15 Peer Leaders

The UWI LEADS Programme is inviting all participants interested in becoming Peer Leaders for the Academic Year 2014-15 to submit Essays of no more than 750 words by the latest July 11 as part of the process of selection. The invitation is particularly extended to all those that participated in the UWI LEADS programme 2013-2014. Interviews will be scheduled for the week of August 4 to August 8.
 
The essays should cover the following:

  • What being a peer leader means to you?
  • Why do you want to become a Peer Leader?
  • What is your leadership philosophy?

 
 

The UWI and University of Havana discuss Caribbean Challenges

Representatives of The University of West Indies (UWI) and the University of Havana, Cuba, recently met at the Institute of International Relations located at The UWI’s St Augustine Campus in Trinidad and Tobago to discuss “Development challenges and possibilities for a deeper integration”. 

 

IMF Head to lecture at The UWI Mona Friday

Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde, will give a lecture at The University of the West Indies Mona Campus, this Friday June 27, 2014 at 4:00p.m. in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre.

The UWI Launches New Caribbean Journal of Criminology

The Institute of Criminal Justice and Security (ICJS), based at the Regional Headquarters of The University of the West Indies (UWI), has announced the launch of its latest publication, the Caribbean Journal of Criminology.

 

The Caribbean Journal of Criminology is a multi-disciplinary, peer-reviewed journal to be published annually. The Journal will promote critical examination of the complex and persistent crime and security problems in the Caribbean, maintaining a balance of theoretical and empirical articles.  While it will pay special attention to the Caribbean region, it will remain open to relevant research that is conducted in other parts of the world.

 

Dr. Erna Brodber, Honorary Visiting Fellow at SALISES for 2014/15 AY

The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies is proud to announce that Dr Erna Brodber will be an Honorary Visiting Fellow at SALISES Mona for the 2014-2015 academic year.
 
Erna Brodber graduated from the University College of the West Indies (UCWI) in 1963 with a BA in History, continuing to complete the MSc Sociology and the PhD in History from the University of the West Indies (UWI). Her work, over many decades, has followed two distinct, though intersecting courses. Her sociologicalresearch has focused on social history and biography, the study of inner-city communities and the respective roles of race, gender, culture and class in Caribbean society.
 

UWI-CHART convenes meeting of Caribbean Partnership Framework Permanent Secretaries of Ministries of Health

The CHART Regional Coordinating Unit at UWI (UWI-CHART) hosted  a landmark meeting of Permanent Secretaries of  Ministries of Health from countries that are signatories to the US-Caribbean Regional HIV/AIDS Partnership Framework (PF), 2010-2014.The PF is the main implementing platform of the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in the CARICOM region. 
 
The primary purpose of the meeting was to outline the initiatives of the UWI-CHART and the CHART Network and to highlight two important changes in the direction and emphasis of CHART work plans, as agreed in consultation with the countries and with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), which is the sponsor of a five-year grant (2012-2017) to UWI-CHART.
