We are The 2015 UWI Intercampus Post-Graduate Debates Champions!

On March 1, 2015 a contingent of five, regal in red, left the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona and journeyed to our Caribbean neighbours down south. The destination was the sister campus in St. Augustine, Trinidad where the annual UWI Intercampus Post-Graduate Debates were scheduled to be held. The debaters from Mona were Donavon Johnson, currently pursuing an MSc. in International Public and Development Management and Wade David, a student in the MSc. Development Studies program at SALISES. Supporting the main men were the Deputy Representative of the Mona Association of Post Graduate Students (MAPS), Maliya Rabathaly, as well as two advisors, Mr Carlton Lowrie, past Director of the Office of Student Services and Development (OSSD) and Dr.
Youth Leaders Interact With President Obama At Historic UWI Town Hall Meeting

Some 350 young leaders from Jamaica and the wider Caribbean attended an historic Town Hall meeting with President of the United States Barack Obama held at The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona Campus on Thursday,
April 9, 2015.
President Obama used the opportunity to launch the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) to expand opportunities for emerging entrepreneurs and civil society activists. The YLAI will provide 250 fellowships each year to enable participants from the United States and the region to develop joint business and civil society initiatives. He later invited questions from the floor, noting that young people will shape the future of our countries, region, and the planet, and it was important to hear their views.
Inderia Adjudah Named All Island Administrative Professional Of The Year

Administrative Officer at The University of the West Indies, Mona Western Jamaica Campus (WJC), Ms. Inderia Adjudah, has been named the All Island Administrative Professional of the Year by the Jamaica Association of Administrative Professionals (JAAP). Ms. Adjudah was selected as the St. James parish representative to the National Competition which took place on Sunday, April 12, 2015 in Mandeville.
Six Senior UWI Lecturers Promoted To Professors

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce the promotion of six of its senior lecturers to the rank of professor, with effect from February 2015. These newly appointed professors qualified for promotion based on their records of teaching and research as well as their contributions to public service. They are Dr Jayaram Chillumuntala of the Cave Hill Campus, Barbados; Dr Colin McKenzie, Dr Matthew Smith and Dr David Tennant, all from Mona Campus, Jamaica; and Dr Patrick Akpaka and Dr Francis Dziva of the St Augustine Campus, Trinidad.
Patrick Prendergast Appointed Acting Director, UWI Mona Western Jamaica Campus

Mr Patrick Prendergast has been appointed Acting Director of The UWI Mona, Western Jamaica Campus, for one year, with effect from May 1, 2015. Mr Prendergast replaces Dr Luz Longsworth who has been appointed Acting Principal of the Open Campus for one year.
Mr Prendergast is Lecturer in Development Communication at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) at The UWI Mona and Programme Coordinator at the Western Jamaica Campus (WJC). He comes to this new position with a wealth of experience as an Academic, Administrator, Communications Specialist and Educator and was among the first UWI Mona lecturers to teach at the WJC.
Professor Verene Shepherd to Address General Assembly on Elimination of Racial Discrimination

University Director of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies, Professor Verene Shepherd, has been invited to be a keynote speaker at a commemorative plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to be held in New York on Friday, March 20, 2015.
The meeting will focus on the status of racial discrimination worldwide, and the theme for this year’s event is “Learning from historical tragedies to combat racial discrimination today”. This year’s commemoration also coincides with the commencement of the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015 - 2024).
UWI Mona Team off to Regional Finals of Hult Prize in Quest of 1 Million US Dollars to Improve Early Childhood Development

A team of six representing The University of the West Indies, Mona will be leaving on Wednesday March 11th, to compete at the sixth annual Hult Prize. The annual Hult Prize Challenge is the world’s largest student competition and start-up platform for social good. In partnership with President Bill Clinton and the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI); the innovative crowd-sourcing platform identifies and launches catalytic social ventures that aim to solve the planet’s most pressing challenges. Student teams compete for a chance to secure USD1 million in start-up funding to launch a sustainable social venture. The Hult Prize, funded by the Hult family, has been named by TIME amongst the top five ideas changing the world.

The Department of History & Archaeology, The University of West Indies, Mona is pleased to announce that the 31st Annual Elsa Goveia Memorial Lecture will be delivered by UWI Emeritus Professor Patrick Bryan, CD. Professor Bryan’s lecture entitled “The Dominican Republic, 1870-1916: Socioeconomic and Ideological Aspects of „Free Labour‟ Plantations” will be delivered on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 5:30pm in the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. This lecture will explore the rise of the “new-style” wage-based sugar plantation labour on the Dominican Republic during the period 1870-1916.
Changing Faces of Leadership at The UWI

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce two senior management changes to drive the strategic direction of the regional institution in its delivery of world-class teaching and online education. The current Principal and Pro Vice-Chancellor of The UWI Open Campus, as well as former Deputy Principal of The UWI Cave Hill Campus, Professor V. Eudine Barriteau, has been appointed as Principal Designate of UWI Cave Hill. Meanwhile, Dr Luz Longsworth, current Director of The UWI Mona’s Western Jamaica Campus has been selected as Acting Principal of the Open Campus for a period of one year. Both appointments take effect from May 1, 2015.
Mona Scool of Business & Management to Host Only Caribbean Event for Open Data Day 2015

Open Data Day, which will take place on Saturday February 21, 2015, is a gathering of citizens in cities around the world to write applications, liberate data, create visualizations and publish analyses using open public data to show support for and encourage the adoption open data policies by the world's local, regional and national governments. This activity will explore how increasingly available open data can be made more accessible and interesting to citizens and the media through innovative visualization techniques and tools.
