New UWI Alumni President calls for significant reconnection with Mona Campus

The new President of the UWI Alumni Association (Jamaica Chapter) is Cecile Clayton, Deputy University Registrar in the Office of Administration, UWI Regional Headquarters.
 
The New  Alumni President called for significant reconnection with the Mona Campus,and called on the members of her Executive to embrace the UWI Reconnect Programme which is being launched at the regional level. She said the Executive will be encouraging alumni of all ages to reconnect and participate in, or support, campus sports, lectures, seminars and fun activities. Upcoming activities include the UWI vs. UTECH Sports Showdown on September 20th, the Mona School of Business Alumni Reconnect on September 26th and the Anti-Violence World Record Attempt on October 2nd.

Eight by Ten Festival returns with CHASE support

The ‘Eight by Ten’ theatre festival, the brainchild of Dr Brian Heap, Head of the Philip Sherlock Centre at The UWI Mona, returns on September 26, 27 and 28 with sponsorship from the CHASE Fund.
 

Diversity of the African World on display at Africa World Documentary Film Festival

September 5, 2014 - Fans of the cinema will be in for a special treat when the Faulty of Humanities and Education, University of the West Indies, Mona hosts the 7th E. Desmond Lee Africa World Documentary Film Festival (AWDFF) from October 2-5, 2014.
 
Films will be screened at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI; admission is free and the festival is open to the public.
 

Sir Hilary Beckles to serve as next Vice-Chancellor of The UWI

An Extraordinary Meeting of University Council convened pursuant to Statue 22 paragraph 5 presided over by the Chancellor of the University, this afternoon (September 5) accepted the report from the Search Committee established to identify a new Vice-Chancellor and agreed to appoint Sir Hilary Beckles as the next Vice-Chancellor of the University with effect from May 1, 2015. 

 

The UWI advised of US Health Department's Policy Shift in HIV/AIDS Funding

The US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) which manages US funding for HIV/AIDS globally, has advised The University of the West Indies that as a result of a global policy shift, funding for The UWI based Caribbean HIV/AIDS Regional Training Programme (CHART) and other funded health training partnerships, will be discontinued by September 1, 2014.
 

National Honours for four UWI Mona academics

Four members of The UWI, Mona community have been named among recipients of National Honours and Awards, with effect from Independence Day, August 6, 2014. The awards will be presented at the annual National Honours and Awards Ceremony to be held at King’s House later this year.
 
The Order of Jamaica (OJ), the country’s  fifth highest honour will be conferred on Director of the Hugh Wynter Fertility Management Unit, Professor Joseph Frederick, for distinguished service to the Faculty of Medical Sciences, The University of the West Indies, and the University Hospital of the West Indies, in particular for research conducted in assisted reproduction.
 

2014 Vice Chancellor's Awards for Excellence to be presented October 27

Three members of staff at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus have been named as recipients of the 2014 Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence. They are Professor Marvin Reid, Director of the Tropical Metabolism Research Unit, and Professor Simon Mitchell, Department of Geography and Geology, who will both be recognized for Outstanding Research Accomplishments; and Professor Hopeton Dunn, Director of the Caribbean Institute of Media & Communications (CARIMAC), whose award is for contributions to public service. 
 

Tribute to the late Hon. G. Raymond Chang

The University of the West Indies, Mona is saddened by the passing of honorary graduate and outstanding business leader and philanthropist, the Hon. G. Raymond Chang. A passionate advocate of continuing education and young adult learning, Mr. Chang was a major donor to The UWI. He served as Patron of the UWI Toronto Benefit Gala, which raised funds for university scholarships and awards to outstanding Caribbean students.
 

Over 500 Master’s and Doctoral Scholarships in Brazil

  • The UWI signs Agreement with Coimbra Group of Brazilian Universities

The University of the West Indies and the Coimbra de Universidades Brasileiras (GCUB)/Coimbra Group of Brazilian Universities (COIMBRA) have signed a General Cooperation Agreement strengthening the relationship between the two institutions.
 
The agreement was signed in May by The UWI Vice Chancelor, E. Nigel Harris and President of the Coimbra de Universidades Brasileiras (GCUB)/Coimbra Group of Brazilian Universities (COIMBRA), Rector Maria Lucia Cavalli Neder when a COIMBRA mission visited the Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados campuses of The UWI. 
 

Regulations governing the payment of fees for Academic Year 2014-2015

To all new and returning students (UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE)
 
TUITION FEES
 
1.    All Fees are due and payable by September 1, 2014 and may be paid per Semester.
2.    Returning students with outstanding balances must settle these as a pre-condition for registration. Students with outstanding balances will NOT BE ALLOWED to select courses for the new academic year and will be denied access to all facilities of the Campus.
3.    Students who have been verified as being approved for Student Loans or other scholarships/grants will be able to select courses and will have full access to all facilities of the Campus.
