JENNIFER KNIGHT-MADDEN PROMOTED TO RANK OF PROFESSOR

The University of the West Indies, Mona is pleased to announce the promotion of Senior Lecturer in the Sickle Cell Unit, Tropical Medicine Research Institute, Dr. Jennifer Knight-Madden, to the rank of Professor with effect from May 28, 2014.
 
Dr. Knight-Madden holds the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree with Honours in Community Health from The University of the West Indies, Mona, the Master of Science in Biometry from Duke University Medical College and the Doctor of Philosophy degree from King’s College, University of London. She is Board Certified in Pediatrics (1993) and Pediatric Pulmonology (1997) by the American Board in Pediatrics and is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Pediatrics, 1994).  

Professor Edward Ghartey Elected AFEA President-Elect

Professor Edward Ghartey, Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences, at The UWI, Mona Campus, has been voted President-elect and Program Chair of African Finance and Economics Association for 2017 annual ASSA meeting to be held in Chicago. His election took place at the January 2-5, 2016 Allied Social Science Associations annual meeting which was organized by the American Economic Association in San Francisco, California, USA.

The 19th Annual Bob Marley Lecture to be Delivered by 2015 Man Booker Prize Winner - Marlon James

The annual Bob Marley Lecture is hosted by the Institute of Caribbean Studies & the Reggae Studies Unit at The UWI Mona Campus. Held in Reggae Month, the lecture is intended to commemorate the birth of Marley as Jamaica’s most successful reggae icon and celebrate reggae among the genres of music Jamaica gave the world in the latter half of the C20th. Inaugurated in 1997, the lecture has traditionally focused on a wide range of topics from Marley, Trench Town, Rastafari and psycho-historiography, to Jamaica’s music business and creative products. Distinguished Jamaicans, scholars, and Marley’s close associates, among them Dr Louis Chude-Sokei, Professor Gordon Rohlehr and Frederick Hickling, Doctor The Hon.

UWI SURGEON AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS ACS FELLOWSHIP

Senior lecturer in the Department of Surgery, Radiology, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at The University of the West Indies,(UWI) Mona and consultant general surgeon at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) Dr. Joseph Plummer, has been selected as one of twelve International Guest Scholars for 2016 by the Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons(ACS).

UWI Partners With OAS on Citizenship Education Programme

 The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona and the Organisation of American States (OAS) have launched a Partnership Programme  which will build UWI’s capacity to promote citizenship education and highlight the importance of governance to the society.  The partnership was launched on Monday, November 2, 2015 by Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal of The UWI, Mona Campus, Professor Archibald McDonald, and OAS Secretary General, H.E. Luis Almagro, at a ceremony held at the Faculty of Law.

Alumni Exemplar Sports Award for UWI Honorary Grad, Usain Bolt

Dr the Honourable Usain Bolt, O.J., has been honoured with the inaugural Vice-Chancellor’s Alumni Exemplar Sports Award from The University of the West Indies (The UWI). ‘Dr Bolt’ received the alumni award for his outstanding sportsmanship, consistent record-breaking athletic performances, his continuing affiliation as an exceptional honorary alum of The UWI, and as an inspiration and role model for Caribbean youth. The award was presented at an intimate ceremony, held at The University’s Regional Headquarters in Mona, Jamaica on October 29th and streamed live. 

Live stream of 2015 UWI Graduation Ceremonies

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce that the graduation ceremonies of all four of its campuses is available for viewing around the world. Friends and family who want to watch loved ones cross the stage can share in the moment via live stream at www.uwi.edu/graduation.

The 2015 installation of graduation ceremonies which began with the Open Campus on Saturday October 10, 2015, will see University Chancellor Sir George Alleyne conferring degrees on a total of 9283 students across the region. A complete itinerary of the remaining ceremonies is included below:

7 Vice-Chancellor’s Awards to Outstanding Academic and Senior Administrative Staff

In his first year as host of the annual Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles will present a total of seven awards to academic and senior administrative staff members of The University of the West Indies (The UWI). The ceremony will be held on October 15, at the Cave Hill Campus’ Roy Marshall Teaching Complex.

A University tradition for more than 20 years, the awards recognise and reward outstanding performance in Teaching, Research Accomplishments, Service to University Community, Contributions to Public Service, and All-round Excellence in a combination of two or more of the four core areas. In the 2012 to 2013 academic year, a departmental award was added to recognise quality, service and operational excellence. 

UWI Task Force Stands Ready to Assist the Bahamas

Deeply concerned that another Caribbean neighbour has been left vulnerable and battered by the 2015 hurricane season, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) stands ready to assist the Bahamas in recovering from the impact of Hurricane Joaquin.

UWI enters into collaboration with Japan’s Sophia University

On September 30, 2015, UWI Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles and President of Sophia University in Japan, Takashi Hayashita signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at enhancing bilateral relationships that will enhance research and education at both institutions, while expanding the spectrum of academic collaboration and cultural awareness between the universities.

The MOU signing at Jamaica House, followed the bilateral meetings held between the heads of government; Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller and Japan’s Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe.
