UWI Mona Team Advances to Regional Finals of Hult Prize in Quest of 1 Million US Dollars to Improve Early Childhood Development

The Hult Prize Foundation recently announced that the University of the West Indies, Mona, Team has advanced to the regional finals of the sixth annual Hult Prize. The annual Hult Prize Challenge is the world’s largest student competition and start-up platform for social good. In partnership with President Bill Clinton and the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI); the innovative crowd-sourcing platform identifies and launches catalytic social ventures that aim to solve the planet’s most pressing challenges. Student teams compete for a chance to secure USD1 million in start-up funding to launch a sustainable social venture. The Hult Prize, funded by the Hult family, has been named by TIME amongst the top five ideas changing the world.

The Department of Literatures in English, University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona takes great pleasure in announcing the appointment of Mr. Storm Saulter as Filmmaker in Residence. Mr. Saulter’s appointment is for the second semester of the 2014/15 academic year and will run from January to May.
UWI Research Days posit innovation as key to development

Researchers at the Mona Campus of The University of the West Indies (UWI) will
demonstrate how key innovations resulting from their work continue to contribute to regional development at the 16th staging of the institution’s annual Research Days exhibition scheduled for Monday, February 9 to Wednesday, February 11 at the Mona Campus. Under the theme ‘Innovating for Development through Science, Creativity, Production and Governance’, the three day exposition will allow investors, policy-makers and stakeholders in the public and private sectors to explore practical solutions to their everyday challenges, developed through Mona research.
French National Honour for Two UWI Academics

The Government of France has conferred the designation Knight of the National Order of Merit (Chevalier de L’Ordre National du Merite) on two members of staff of The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. They are Head of the Department of Modern Languages, Dr. Paulette Ramsay, and Senior Lecturer and former head of the Department of Government, Dr. Jessica Byron-Reid.
The award, which was created in 1963 by President Charles de Gaulle, recognizes distinguished service and exceptional contributions to France by French or non-French individuals who have given significant service in the military, or in the public or private sector.
Mona School of Business and Management Prepares for International Conference

The University of the West Indies’ Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) is fine-tuning arrangements for its inaugural international conference on Business and Management to be held January 7-9, 2015 at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The Conference is being held under the theme, “Breaking the Barriers: Enterprise, Competitiveness, Growth and Development”.

The University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) would like to inform its employees and clients that it is actively engaged in ensuring that all the necessary procedures are implemented for the prevention and control of all infectious diseases. The UHWI follows the guidelines of the Jamaica Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization, the Pan American Health Organization and the Caribbean Public Health Agency.
The UHWI Infection Control Committee has existed for 40 years. The UHWI Ebola Preparedness Committee was established in response to the current outbreak in West Africa. The UHWI is actively implementing the necessary preparedness measures to ensure the safety of its staff, students and clients.
Xavienne Roma Richardson Winner of the Inaugural Gloria Lyn Memorial Prize

Xavienne Roma Richardson, a student in the Department of Literatures in English at The UWI, Mona has been named the winner of the inaugural Gloria Lyn Memorial prize. The US$500 award will be made annually to the student with the highest grade in any of the second year courses in West Indian literature offered at the Mona Campus.

1. What is Chikungunya?
Chikungunya fever is an emerging mosquito-borne disease caused by an alphavirus, Chikungunya virus. The disease is transmitted by the bite of an Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquito. CHIKV is spread when the female Aedes mosquito bites an infected person and then bites other people.
2. Does Jamaica have both the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes?
No. There are NO Aedes albopictus mosquitoes in Jamaica at this time.
Aedes aegypti, however, is endemic to Jamaica and is the same mosquito that transmits the dengue fever virus.
3. How does the Aedes aegypti mosquito operate?
UWI to provide new student housing under innovative private-public partnership arrangement

Ground was broken at The University of the West Indies, Mona on Thursday, September 18, 2014 for a new housing development which will enable the institution to provide accommodation for an additional 1,584 students over the next three years.
The first set of 576 units will be delivered in time for the start of the 2015/16 academic year.
